All About Teacher Jess:

Jess nurtured an early love for music and life studying Suzuki violin from age 5 with one of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s own students, Carol Waldvogel (Milwaukee, WI).  Now with 23 years playing experience and ten years private and group teaching experience, it is her highest hope to grow more goodness and beautiful hearts through teaching violin.

She attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, pursuing a degree in Violin Performance under Nobuyoshi Yasuda. After one year as Concertmaster of the University Chamber Orchestra and first violinist in the University Symphony Orchestra, she relocated temporarily to Johnson City, TN to study Appalachian culture and American fiddle traditions (East Tennessee State University). Upon return to Wisconsin, she earned a Bachelors of Social Work and Spanish, continuing a music and teaching career on her own watch. With gratitude to venerated mentors Hunter Berry, Sammy Lind, Roy Andrade, and David Yates, Ed Snodderly, Daniel Boner, Sue Demel and many others, she now focuses musically on old time fiddle, banjo, guitar, songwriting and singing.
Completing her first Suzuki Teacher Training in 2012 with Michele Higa George (Chicago Suzuki Institute), Jess now enters her fifth year as teaching artist at the Old Town School of Folk Music, maintains her own private lesson studio in Logan Square, and teaches as a clinician/staff musician Augusta Heritage Center’s Old Time Week (Elkins, WV), Miles of Music Camp (Lake Winnipesaukee, NH/Boston, MA) and Midwest Suzuki clinics. She is a composer and violinist for the House Theatre Company of Chicago, performs locally with members of Old Lazarus’ Harp Folk Collective and myriad country and old time bands, and tours (inter)nationally with Al Scorch & The Country Soul Ensemble (Bloodshot Records) and her original music project, Joybird.
